Autism Soccer strives to make a life long difference in a child’s life. Children with Autism experience a multitude of challenges, but also many abilities. Autism Soccer will first work with each child to help him or her identify the roles and expectation of children participants and adult coaches. From this point, using ABA techniques as well as sports concepts, Autism Soccer will develop specific skills in each child as that which would be observed among typically developing children, but with the support these special needs children require to ensure success. Students with Autism benefit from experiencing a group activity, which reinforces language, social skills, sensory integration, gross motor work, motor planning, and ultimately bringing greater enjoyment of life moments.
Children with Autism vary greatly in needs and abilities, but most generally respond better with the presence of visuals to aid in communication. Visuals must be created in formats which are easy for children to understand what demand is being placed on them, and demands need to be broken down into smaller steps. So, for example, when warm up exercises are being taught, visuals of each exercise should be created, and each movement or pose modeled, then children provided assistance in carrying out the exercise. Always praise and reinforce effort, regardless of result.
Coaches for Autism Soccer need to receive training in physical fitness and safety techniques, as well as in Applied Behavior Analysis, and possess a general understanding of the varied needs of children on the Spectrum. Towards this end, Autism Soccer working on future Certification as Clinical Coaches (CCC).
Individualization of Children’s Needs: Each child will have to have individualized protocols which take into account the various clinical areas which have to be addressed as services are rendered.
Such protocols have to be developed through the collaboration of multiple clinical specialties as needed for each child. Autism Soccer incorporates skills from various clinical specialties, including:
Autism Soccer is not any one of the therapies mentioned above, but it does incorporate techniques, skills, and reinforces children’s abilities in all those areas.
